The Capital One Bowl

Penn State is playing LSU in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Orlando has had torential rains all this week making the playing field a quagmire of mud and water.

Anyone my age or older, having never played on artificial turf, knows the ugliness of playing in mud. It is never fun. The ball is wet so the quarterback can never get a good grip on it to pass. The receivers can't get a good grip on it to catch it, and the rest of the team spends their time sliding around in the goo.

Sounds like fun doesn't it?

Penn State finally scored with 1:54 left in the first quarter. LSU in now at the 10 at the start of the 2nd quarter. LSU is going for a field goal, and now the score is Penn State 7, LSU 3.

I love camping

I absolutely love camping. Hanging out around the campfire, hiking, swimming, being with family and good friends. Sleeping in a tent, or if the weather is nice outside under the stars. Eating food made over an open fire. There is nothing better than that.

Time for Spring Cleaning

Yes, Spring Cleaning time is here. Hurrah!! I can hardly wait for spring cleaning. It is the most exciting time in my life.

And if you believe that, I have some swamp land that I think that you will be interested in. You see, I have a lot of stuff that needs to be junked. I have a basement full of stuff that is on no use to anyone. Especially not me. So something has to happen. Something has to go. And it has to be the junk in my basement.

Junk Hauling is such a unglamorous way of looking at the people who are going to be my saviors. I like the idea of having someone else move this junk out of my house. Yes, I have gotten older, and a little heavier so to have someone else slog up and down the stairs to my house moving this crap out of it has a certain positive tone to it. I was talking to my Father in Law about some of the stuff he needs done at his house the other day and he is all on board with this also. He is also looking for quotes from Demolition Companies as he has a couple of sheds on his property that he would like to have torn down.

We were looking on the web for junk removal and came across Junk Removal in San Diego, which is unfortunate because we live in Pennsylvania. Guess that my search will have to continue.

More advertising ideas

When you write a blog you are always looking at ways to get your site url out to the masses. We, blog writers, are sick that way. MLW still doesn't understand why I do this. I have tried to explain, but just smile and shrug my shoulders now.

That all being said, I have friends who have made up bumper stickers, and business cards that they hand out along with buttons and pins etc. The one idea that I really like is having Printed T Shirts made up with the logo for your blog. I have one friend who has done this and has been pretty successful with it. He sells them on his site and makes a little cash to go along with it.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

I envision legions of people wearing Promotional T Shirts with the logo from my blog on them. Or maybe just my smiling face with the url under it. We have a number of festivals on the river here in Harrisburg where I could hand the shirts out. Or I could just put a link on my site and do as my buddy has been doing. Hmmm. Either way I think that I am going to Make T Shirts my next area of advertising attention.

Have you take a good look at Chester Cheetah lately?

You know, the Cheetah in the Cheeto's commercials?

Yeah, that Chester Cheetah.

Is it me, or is this new one kinda creepy?

The old Chester was always hanging with kids, being cool, messing things up. This new one is rather sinister. Telling people to stick cheetos up sleeping peoples noses. While he, Chester, is giving a stewardess a back rub.

Or what about the one where he is all of a sudden playing chess in a laundromat? And he tells this woman to toss cheetos into a dryer full of whites. What happened to Chester? Where is the good time cheetah? What horrific thing happened to turn him into a night dwelling trouble maker?

That is way to Quentin Tarentino for this guy.

Brad's really bad day

So I am talking to my friend Brad yesterday. Actually, he called me on his way to work. And he procedes to tell me how his day has gone from bad to worse.

First he wakes up and takes a look at his aquarium and sees that all of his fish are dead. For some of us, this wouldn't be a major concern, but Brad has had every kind of aquarium that you can think of. He has set up fresh water, and salt water tanks. He has had fish from the most common to some really expensive fish. This particular tank had just goldfish in it. It was a fresh water tank, there were no saltwater fish in it. Just goldfish. And they were dead. Not the way to start your morning.

The rest of his morning was spent arguing with his daughters, and then going to work. But we kept coming back to setting up another tank. He just can't decide whether to set it up with fresh water, or saltwater fish. He has the equipment for both, but he isn't sure if his wife will agree to the expense of the live coral. Though that is the way he is leaning right now. You can set up some really interesting tanks using salt water.

House hunting

Lots of folks are out there house hunting right now. The prices for housing has come down considerably from last year. The economy tanking is one reason, another is the number of foreclosures out there due to the kinds of home loans were originated previous to the fall of 2008.

My son and his girlfriend are looking for a house right now out in California. And not having much luck with it. It isn't that they aren't putting in any effort, they have been looking at house after house. And they have been putting in offers, I think that the number is up to 6 at this point.

No, I think that they need a better realtor. So,being the meddling Dad that I am I turn to my friendly seach engine and put in the keywords "good realtor." Interestingly enough, with it not being a very specific search I come up with a realtor in Austin, Texas. And if everything I am reading is accurate, I like the way that Austin Realtors think.

The website talks about the partnership between the buyer and the realtor. A win-win proposition. Honesty, integrity, communcation. I like these concepts. And I wish that they kids had this where they are looking.

But that is just me being a meddling Dad.

Everyone who has a blog, reads a blog, knows someone who blogs has heard about the thousands of dollars that can be made online. And with the amount of people who log in every day looking for specific answers to questions and such, there is a huge market.

But it isn't as easy as just setting up the blog and raking in the dough. You have to have a plan in mind, a structure that needs to be followed before you can even begin to earn any real cash. There is a science to blogging. And it is called SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. And it isn't all that difficult, but it is specific if you want to succeed.

Think of the process: People go to google, or yahoo, or whatever search engine they are using and type in their question. The search engine goes out on the web and pulls in the sites that are most relevant to the question. Read that again. The search engine displays the site that has the most relevant terms that come from the question.

If your question is about "Zombies", then the site that has that term in its address, and the title of its article, and that word throughout the article will be the first one on the page. And as a writer of blogs with something to sell that is what you want. To be the first link that is clicked on.

To make money online you have to know what to do. To not follow the plan is way too much like writing in your diary and putting it under your pillow.

There is one profession that I told my two male children to seriously consider when they got out of high school.

Plumbing. Yep, you read that right. Be a Plumper. They are paid well, and they always have work. If they are a good Plumber. One who prices their services fairly, is honest about what work needs to be done, and who completes that work quickly and with a minimum of fuss.

That kind of plumber is worth their weight in gold. And that type of plumber will never have to worry about not enough business. That is why I recommended being a Plumber to my sons.

Of course they didn't listen to me. I never expected that they would, but Dad's feel better when we give out that kind of advice. It is balm for our souls.

That all being said, I came across this plumber, Atlanta Plumber to be exact. I want this guy to be my plumber. Just reading through his website I get a good feeling about this guy and his business. It is like he is giving you a tutorial on how to find a good plumber. Which has to mean that HE is a good plumber. It just follows, doesn't it?

It has to. And if I lived in the Atlanta area, this guy would be my go to plumber.

Lap Band

Lap Band surgery has crossed my mind a few times. The lap band surgery is similar to gastric bypass but without the bypassing of your gastric system. The recovery time is a lot less than with traditional bypass surgery.

One of my relatives had bypass performed and did quite well with it. I found a site that describes lab band, and read some of the lap band testimonials there and found them to be very helpful. I also checked out 1-800-GET-SLIM. That all lead me to lap band before and after where you get to really check out the success stories. Because a picture speaks a lot louder than words.

I am still thinking about having this surgery. You should do you homework before you think about it. But you should also think about how good you will look after you lose the excess weight that is getting you down right now.

Zombies among us

Ah Spring time. The days get longer, the weather is warmer, and the zombies start hanging out in the park again.

The Park Patrol will be starting soon. These are the guys who traipse through the park as the sun goes down to make sure that everyone is out of the park.

And of course as soon as they leave, the zombies come back to play. They hang out in the baseball dugouts, and they shamble through the woods drinking cheap beer, and smoking cheap ditch weed.

Weirdos. Most of them are disaffected rich, white kids. You would think that they would be able to afford a better brand of self-medication.

Trying to find the right insurance is akin to having your teeth extracted. One by one. With a wrench. Without any pain killer.

And, I think, that that is a positive view of the process of choosing the right kind of insurance. But it can be made easier, and there are companies out there that are trying to do that for us consumers. I found one in the UK the other day that impressed me quite a bit. And it reminded me of a story.

My Father-in-Law, and Mother-in-Law have visited the UK twice. My Mother-in-Law has Welsh ancestry. The story is that they rented a car so that they could travel at their own pace. Unfortunately, my FIL didn't practice driving on the Left side of the road. In the first day of having their rental car, he drove it over no less than 5 curbs, and got stuck on the inside of a roundabout. When they stopped for the night my FIL was ready to turn the car in and use public transportation. My MIL being a calm one, talked him out of it. Luckily, they also took out rental insurance on the car.

Junk is taking over my life

MLW and I have been married for 11 years. Both of us had been married before, and, consequently brought a bunch of stuff with us when we decided that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. A bunch of stuff is really an understatement.

I moved from a 2 bedroom condo, and MLW moved from a 3 bedroom house into our small 2 bedroom home. Our basement is full of stuff. And until recently, our carport was full of stuff. Most of the items we have have not seen the light of day for several years. Most of the eleven years of our marriage, if you want to really be truthful about it.

Last year MLW and The Princess went ot Maui with The Princess' Paternal Grandmother and her family. I didn't go, because I am not the Paternal part of that family. I got to stay home and work. No biggie. I really wanted to get some work done around the house. Specifically getting rid of some of the junk that we have piled around in the basement. I wanted to put a dumpster in the driveway and just fill it up. MLW was not to keen on that idea. Then I got the idea to start looking on line for Hauling, or Junk Removal, and even Junk Hauling. And there are a lot of them. So I got a little discouraged.

I ended up just doing it myself. Which was exhausting. And incomplete, because it would have been a lot easier on me to just be able to point at a pile of stuff and say "That is what is going, have fun." Which is what I am going to do next time, because I still have a ton of stuff that needs to get out of this house.

Art as life

I can't imagine a life without art. Impressionists, cubist, modern, graphic, contemporary. I love it all. I like to wander through galleries and stare at what has been created. Losing myself in the vision of the artist.

MLW likes Glen Tarnowski, among others. And I can see why she would. The colors he uses, and the slightly off center subject matter is what is appealing to me also. His art reminds me of some of the album covers from the 70's, and early 80's. Combinations of everyday items put in fantastic situations. Houses floating on clouds, with books flying next to them. A man with an hour glass as his head. I just love looking at it all.

Walk a mile in my shoes

Spring is springing. Actually it has already sprung, but this is only the second day of Spring. Go figure.

Anyway. Shoes. It is time for my annual search for the perfect shoe. I have had this search going on for the past few years. I went through my Teva phase, and now I am looking for the next installment.

Everywhere we go I see folks wearing them, and we have friends who swear by them, but I am not convinced. What am I talking about? Crocs Shoes, thats what I am talking about. I just don't see the attraction, and I can't see how you feet don't come away all sweaty. So, Croc's aren't for me.

I need some new shoes for work, and though I really do like the look of Bostonian Shoes, but I have to wear slip resistant shoes for work. So, no really good looking work shoes for me. Bummer.

And the hippie is me is thinking Birkenstocks. Much to the chagrin of MLW, and The Princess. They would prefer that I not wear sandals. Mandals, as they call them. They would much prefer that I only wear sneakers, or go shoeless. And I can feel the allure of going shoeless, but there are times when it is good to have something on your feet that you don't have to lace up. I do so love my sandals.

I have this monster sweet tooth

It is a burden that I carry. I love sugar in all of its various forms. Especially candy. MMMMMMMM, candy.

Growning up I consumed candy by the bucket loads. Gum, especially Wrigley's Gum, candy bars like Baby Ruth, Bun Bars, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Payday, Almond Joy. How can you not like Almond Joy? Coconut, and almonds. Does it get any better than that?

I love Butterfinger, who doesn't? Carmello. Do you remember Carmello? Chocolate, and caramel. Together. In this rich, milk chocolatey goodness. I am in heaven right now.

I never could get my head around the Chunky bar. Just a big square of chocolate. One had peanuts, and one had raisins. I was never a raisin fan when I was a kid. I ate them now and again, but it wasn't a food of choice. Unless it was in my Aunts rum cake. I loved that rum cake.

And we haven't even talked about Mints yet. Of course, the only mints worth talking about are the ones that are paired with chocolate. Have you noticed a pattern here? The After 8 dinner mint cookies. Oh god. and Thin Mints? Put them on my pillow at night and I might not ever leave your hotel. And let us not forget about York Peppermint Patties. They are wonderful, are they not?

I am in a blissful heaven of chocolate, and sugar.

The girls and I were watching American Idol the other night when they had the contestants singing Michael Jackson songs. The music brought back really great memories for MLW and I, and piqued The Princess' interest musically.

After the show was over, I found a site talking about MJ's return to the stage. And being a curious kind of guy I wanted to find out where you can find Tickets to Michael Jackson concerts. I was thinking that it would be kind of cool to share one of his concerts with The Princess.

Heading the right way

Well kids, it is that time of year again. The time of year when I have to have my truck inspected by one of the valiant, and certified mechanics that do business here in Pennsylvania.

You see, we have to inspect our vehicles yearly to make sure that they are safe to drive about on the roads. I am not going to talk about the hundreds of uninsured drivers out there, because we know that they are driving safe cars. Even if they aren't driving too safely themselves,

One thing that I know I am going to have to replace this year is my ball joints on the right side of the vehicle. My power steering rack, related components are fine, but I just know that that pesky ball joint is going to need some attention. I was looking at carsteering.com the other day and found that they ship free. That is a major plus for me, because I can order my part, and have it shipped right to my mechanics garage with no probs.

Now, you might ask, why don't I have my mechanic order my parts? Well, this way he will know that I want to come in to get the truck worked on, and he will give me a call and let me know when he can do it. It is a wonderful relationship we have.

I want to open a brew pub

We all know that I am a world class homebrewer. At least I have been telling you all that for the past couple of years. And I figure if I believe it, and have been telling you all that, it must be true.

That's the way I look at it.

Anyway, my next step is my own brew pub. I like that idea. So I am looking for the perfect location, and I am thinking that there is no PERFECT LOCATION. If your product is good enough, people will crawl through busted glass on their lips to get to where you are.

Again, that is the way I look at it so it must be. Leave me alone.

Being that this is going to be MY brew pub, I don't have a name yet but I am working on it, I also am going to need to look at the seating. I am envisioning some booths, and then tables. But I don't want my customers to sitting on just some crappy regular restaurant chair. I want them to have the best seating, the most comfortable chairs that I can get for them. And don't forget the bar stools.

I am getting overwhelmed with this. But I must persevere. You, my buying public deserve to have a warm, welcome place to come enjoy my wonderful beer. Dodd Family Brewing Company Red Ale has to be considered one of the wonders of the modern world. At least as far as I am concerned it is.

It is finally getting warm here in Pennsylvania, and we all know what that means.

Yeah. I am so excited. I took the Roxinator to the groomer today to get her claws sharpened in preparation.

See that red glow in her eyes? That means that she is ready to hit the mean streets and kick some zombie bootie. Or Bootay, as she likes to call it.

Quite the opposite of being thin skinned

I have some extra skin kind of flopping around.

Not a pretty image, I know. Regardless, it is reality. Having been a large person all of my life, gaining and losing weight along with getting older, my skin has lost some of its elasticity.

Ok, a lot of its elasticity.

So I have taken to my favorite search engine looking for plastic surgeons in my area who could help me with this. And with the web being planet based I came across a United Kingdom site that offers Free Surgery Advice for prospective patients. I like that idea. Looking for unwanted visitors

The Eldest Son, and his Significant Other are looking to purchase a house. Is it appropriate to call someone a Significant Other, anymore? Or is that too 80's?

They are all geeked up because of the housing market in California, as that is where they live. Makes sense to me. They are looking at foreclosed properties, and properties in the process of foreclosure. And there are a bunch of them. One thing that I have been telling them would be a good idea is to hire someone to do a building and pest inspections. That would just make sense to me. One more way to make sure that their investment is in good order before they lay down their cash.

But, I am only the Father. I can only make suggestions that seem to make sense to me. You know how parents can be, now don't you?

Spring is getting ready to sprung.

Ok, I know that the usage is wrong, but you get the meaning.

Spring is coming!! Aren't you excited? You should be. No more snow, sleet, or slush. I can't wait.

And the real kick off to Spring is Easter. That is when you can break out the colorful clothes, and put away the browns, blacks, and dark blues of winter.

When the kids were younger, we always had an Easter egg hunt for them. It was a lot easier when the weather was nice and we could hide the eggs in the backyard for them to find. But that was just the icing on the cake for the kids. Leading up to Easter we would do some easter craft or two also. There is always dyeing eggs, and decorating the Easter baskets. There are so many ways to decorate your eggs other than just putting them in dye.

This year I think that I am more excited in the warm weather than in anything else.

Twilight is on my mind

Yeah.

I have been reading Twilight. Just like everyone else out there with a pulse. And I have to say that I am completely under-whelmed.

First off you have Edward:

This guy is over 100 years old, and he is stalkling a 17 year old girl. Tell me that that is romantic. There is no mystery here, other than a vampire doing his job of messing with a human.

And then we have Jacob Black.

Jacob is a nice enough guy until his werewolf genetics take over. And then his real colors show. He is an abuser. Isn't that lovely.

Finally we have Bella. Bella Swan.

Bella is a treat. She is a self-absorbed, whiny snot. She has a Father who needs to be smacked upside of his head, and a Mother who needs some medication.

That is my take on Twilight.

Pants that stand up

I tend to do a lot of walking. I would rather be jogging, but I need to get rid of some weight before that happens This year I am planning to start walking The Appalacian Trail in pieces.

To walk the trail correctly you have to be prepared. Even if you are only taking a short walk. You will need your camera, some water, an energy bar, your cellphone, a small first aid kit, and whatever else you feel that you need. The concern is where are you going to put all of that. I need some sleep

I have not been sleeping well lately. And I think that it is my bed.

My bed is a lot of years old. Along with my mattress. I have this platform bed, and what used to be a semi-firm mattress. It was comfortable enough. But not lately. At least I think that it is the bed and mattress that is making me toss and turn.

And my wife just asked what the bed had to do with the mattress. I just figure that if we are going to get a new mattress, we should get a new bed. Sounds logical to me.

So the search begins. And of course after I turn to my favorite search engine one of the sites that turns up is beds uk. They have this huge selection of beds. Unfortunately I am located in the US.

But they have some really cool looking beds. And I think that if I had a cool looking bed to go with my new mattress I would sleep so much better. I can pretty much guarantee it, because a cool looking bed goes with wonderful, relaxing sleep. I know that I have seen that in a movie somewhere.

I am sitting here typing this instead of doing the things that I should be doing.

Like cleaning the kitchen before I destroy it again by bottling beer, and making banana bread. Separately, not together. I actually have to wash some bottles before I can put beer in them, and even then I have to sanitize them for a couple of hours before the actual beer gets into them.

Aren't you glad that you asked?

Anyway, I got to thinking and reading about success. I struggle with my personal definition of success on a daily basis. I am 50 years old, I know I don't look it but still. I don't have all of the toys that some of our peers do, but would having those toys make me happy? I don't have the big bank account, but would having more money really do it for me?

Hmmm. More money. It would be nice, but what do I have to do for it? I already have sold my soul to the company store for the past 30 years. What more would they expect of me?

So. Success. The real point of this is that you are never a failure at anything. Wow. Think of that for a minute.

Nothing ever fails. It turns out the way it is supposed to. In my beer, if I don't add yeast it doesn't ferment. It turns out the way that it is suppposed to. If I don't add the hops, it stays cloyingly sweet. The hops add bitterness. And the beer turns out the way that it is supposed to.

No failure kids. A does = B. The demon is always in the details.

So don't give up when something doesn't turn out the way you expect. Figure out what went wrong and change it. Change is always what is needed.

Don't ever give up.

I looked around for about 5 months before I decided on a cruiser, even though I have always wanted to ride a Katana, or a Ninja. But I chose the Magna because of its stability on the road, and the sound of its pipes as I was going through the gears.

Yep. We are going to be talking about HDTV for awhile here, kids. As I am in the market for a new television. Not just any television. I want me one of those big mondo televisions. One that is along the cinema center size televisions. One where you can sell popcorn before your friends get into the family room.

I want one of those kind of televisions. And I went looking around for one today. Got into The Red Beast and went to the first big box retailers that I came too. Got out, went in, looked around, asked some questions and went back out to The Red Beast. Went to the next big box retailer. Got out, went in, rinse and repeat.

As I was doing this I kept thinking that there has to be a better way. And there is. I just wish that I would have found it before I wasted 3 hours of driving around, and talking to disinterested clerks. That solution would be youreviewelectronics.com. I went to their site and got to check out the various companies products. Like the Samsung TV reviews. You will find reviews on their tv's both LCD and Plasma from 40" on up. Building a better mouse trap

The mouse trap is already made, he is just honing his skills.

We have 2 cats. Bubba, and Buster. Bubba is the senior statesman of the cats. He has been with us longest. Bubba was rescued from the mean streets of Chambersburg, Pa and put up for adoption.

We adopted him.

Bubba spent the first year of his time with us in our basement. He did not like people in any way, shape or form. But he has formed a connection to MLW. And her to him. Bubba does not like being petted. He does like to rub against your feet, and you can tell that he really, REALLY wants to be rubbed and scratched, but something that happened to him early in his life keeps him from those pleasures.

The cats like to hang out in our kitchen during the winter months looking for mice. Yes, occaisionally one of the little buggers gets in our house. And that is when the fun starts. Because Bubba likes to catch mice. In a big way. Bubba will do whatever it takes to get the mouse. And then play with the mouse. Bubba is fierce.

The other night I heard Bubba scrabbling around in the kitchen. And then I heard him growling. Bubba does not growl. I got up, went into the kitchen, and there was not Bubba the abused cat. There was Bubba, Mouse Hunter. And he was growling at me, he did not want me to get his mouse. Especially since he hadn't shown it to his human yet.

Yes. Bubba wanted to show his kill to MLW. Now doesn't that bring a smile to your face. Espcially since she was sitting on the couch telling me to get rid of the mouse. That her favorite cat had just killed, and wanted to show her. Because she is his human.

Tell me that that isn't a messed up way to spend an evening at home.

Michigan Proposal 1

Michigan and Medical Marijuana

Ok.

So Proposal 1 passed with a 63% majority of the voters. That is great, but a few nagging questions are still out there.

I went to NORML's Michigan chapter to find out what exactly the passing of this proposal means now:

Q: Where are seriously and terminally ill patients in Michigan going to get their medical marijuana?

A: The new law doesn't address that. In the other 12 states where medical marijuana is legal, only New Mexico has the government helping to secure the drug for patients. Michigan's law simply states that a patient can possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana or grow 12 plants in a secure facility. Law enforcement officials say the drug will have to be obtained in the illegal market and that despite the new law, Michigan patients will still be lawbreakers in the eyes of federal agencies.

Q. Can I start smoking medical marijuana today?

A. Not legally. "There is no medical marijuana program in Michigan until about April 4," said James McCurtis, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Community Heath.

He said the law won't take effect until Dec. 4, and then the state has four months to develop rules and regulations to run the program, which will include the issuance of state ID cards for the estimated 50,000 patients who might qualify under the new law.

Q. Is the medical marijuana law just the first step in a broader agenda to legalize pot use for all adults?

A. Perhaps. A quarter of the U.S. population now lives in a state that allows medical marijuana, so attitudes about its broader use could change. The Marijuana Policy Project, based in Washington D.C., spent about $1.7 million on the ballot proposal here.

So don't go out and fire one up on the front porch, because until April 2009 that would be a bad thing.

Corporate Community Activisim

It is always refreshing to see a company actually mean what it says about being "active in our community". Too many times you hear the words, but don't see the action. Heritage Web Solutions in Provo, Utah is doing just that. They are acting out, via their associates, their corporate duty as a part of the Provo community.

Heritage Internet Technologies’ Good Works Committee is pleased to announce that we have teamed up with the Parks and Recreation department for the city of Provo, Utah in an effort to maintain the Moon River section of the Provo River Trail System.

The committee held their first cleanup event on September 24th 2008. We were pleased to see a large number of employees, as well as their families and friends, attend. Everyone was in good spirits, and had a great time as they dug in and brought this trail back to its original beauty.
The cleanup project included graffiti removal in the two tunnel portions of the trail section, vandalism repair, as well as litter and debris removal along the trail.

The HIT Good Works Committee conducts bi-weekly checks of the trail to ensure that it is being properly maintained. We will also be holding cleanup events once a month with our next event scheduled for October 29th 2008. We are looking forward to having as great of a turnout as we were able to have last month.
Heritage Internet Technologies has always been eager to find ways to give back to our surrounding community. We are very excited to join forces with the Provo City Parks and Recreation department to help maintain this beautiful trail system.

Why should other Alaskans be arrested for something Sarah Palin once did with impunity?

When it comes to questions about youthful marijuana use, Sarah Palin is no Slick Willie. "I can't claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled," the Republican vice presidential candidate told the Anchorage Daily News in 2006, before she was elected governor of Alaska.

Although Palin's handling of the issue scores higher on the candor meter than Clinton's, she has the same difficulty reconciling her personal experience with her policy positions, a problem also shared by former pot smoker Barack Obama. None of them has a persuasive answer to the question of why other Americans should be arrested for something they did with impunity.

Pot smokers who are arrested do not typically spend much time in jail. But as a 2007 report from the Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics noted, they pay a substantial cost that includes not only public humiliation and legal expenses but collateral sanctions such as "revocation or suspension of professional licenses, barriers to employment or promotion, loss of educational aid, driver's license suspension, and bars on adoption, voting and jury service."

According to figures released by the FBI this week, about 873,000 people were arrested on marijuana charges in the United States last year, a new record. Pot busts accounted for nearly half of the 1.8 million drug arrests; as usual, the vast majority, about 775,000, were for simple possession, as opposed to cultivation or sale.

This is the fifth year in a row that marijuana arrests have increased, but the upward trend began in the early 1990s. Three times as many people were arrested on marijuana charges last year as in 1991.

The increase in arrests does not correspond to an increase in use; instead, the chance that any given pot smoker will be busted (though still small) is much higher than it was two decades ago. It is also higher than when Palin attended college in the '80s, which is presumably when she tried marijuana.

By way of extenuation, the Anchorage Daily News reported, Palin noted that marijuana "was legal under state law," although "illegal under U.S. law." In 1975 the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that the state constitution, which says the "right of the people to privacy is recognized and shall not be infringed," prohibits the government from punishing people for possessing small amounts of marijuana in their homes.

A 1990 ballot initiative ostensibly recriminalized all marijuana possession, but in 2003 the Alaska Court of Appeals ruled that "a statute which purports to attach criminal penalties to constitutionally protected conduct is void." The following year, the Alaska Supreme Court declined to hear the state's appeal of that decision.

In 2006 the state legislature, at the urging of Palin's predecessor, Frank Murkowski, passed another law that supposedly made private possession of marijuana for personal use a crime. A judge found that law unconstitutional as well, and the Alaska Supreme Court is considering an appeal of her ruling.

The upshot is that smoking marijuana in the privacy of one's home is just as legal in Alaska today as it was when Palin did it. Evidently she regrets this situation.

As mayor of Wasilla in 2000, Palin championed a city council resolution opposing a ballot initiative that would have legalized marijuana for adults. Last March her administration asked the Alaska Supreme Court to reverse its 1975 decision shielding private marijuana use, arguing that the drug is more dangerous than it used to be.

In other words, Palin got to smoke pot without worrying about legal consequences and now wants to deny that assurance to fellow Alaskans doing exactly the same thing. It's Palin's job to teach her children that certain pleasures are reserved for grownups. The government should not continue to arrest adults who are harming no one simply because her children are easily confused.

A couple of years ago my Mother started having trouble seeing. Her vision was cloudy, like there was a film over her eyes. Her night vision became bad, with lights looking like stars. She had cataracts.

WikiAnswers has a simple explaination:

William Randolph Hearst (Citizen Kane) and the Hearst Paper Manufacturing Division of Kimberly Clark owned vast acreage of timberlands. The Hearst Company supplied most paper products. Patty Hearst's grandfather, a destroyer of nature for his own personal profit, stood to lose billions because of hemp.

In 1937, Dupont patented the processes to make plastics from oil and coal. Dupont's Annual Report urged stockholders to invest in its new petrochemical division. Synthetics such as plastics, cellophane, celluloid, methanol, nylon, rayon, Dacron, etc., could now be made from oil. Natural hemp industrialization would have ruined over 80% of Dupont's business.

THE CONSPIRACY
Andrew Mellon became Hoover's Secretary of the Treasury and Dupont's primary investor. He appointed his future nephew-in-law, Harry J. Anslinger, to head the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

Secret meetings were held by these financial tycoons. Hemp was declared dangerous and a threat to their billion dollar enterprises. For their dynasties to remain intact, hemp had to go. These men took an obscure Mexican slang word: 'marihuana' and pushed it into the consciousness of America.

MEDIA MANIPULATION
A media blitz of 'yellow journalism' raged in the late 1920s and 1930s. Hearst's newspapers ran stories emphasizing the horrors of marihuana. The menace of marihuana made headlines. Readers learned that it was responsible for everything from car accidents to loose morality.

Films like 'Reefer Madness' (1936), 'Marihuana: Assassin of Youth' (1935) and 'Marihuana: The Devil's Weed' (1936) were propaganda designed by these industrialists to create an enemy. Their purpose was to gain public support so that anti-marihuana laws could be passed.

Examine the following quotes from 'The Burning Question' aka REEFER MADNESS:

a violent narcotic.
acts of shocking violence.
incurable insanity.
soul-destroying effects.
under the influence of the drug he killed his entire family with an ax.
more vicious, more deadly even than these soul-destroying drugs (heroin, cocaine) is the menace of marihuana!

Reefer Madness did not end with the usual 'the end.' The film concluded with these words plastered on the screen: TELL YOUR CHILDREN.

In the 1930s, people were very naive; even to the point of ignorance. The masses were like sheep waiting to be led by the few in power. They did not challenge authority. If the news was in print or on the radio, they believed it had to be true. They told their children and their children grew up to be the parents of the baby-boomers.

On April 14, 1937, the Prohibitive Marihuana Tax Law or the bill that outlawed hemp was directly brought to the House Ways and Means Committee. This committee is the only one that can introduce a bill to the House floor without it being debated by other committees. The Chairman of the Ways and Means, Robert Doughton, was a Dupont supporter. He insured that the bill would pass Congress.

Dr. James Woodward, a physician and attorney, testified too late on behalf of the American Medical Association. He told the committee that the reason the AMA had not denounced the Marihuana Tax Law sooner was that the Association had just discovered that marihuana was hemp.

Few people, at the time, realized that the deadly menace they had been reading about on Hearst's front pages was in fact passive hemp. The AMA understood cannabis to be a MEDICINE found in numerous healing products sold over the last hundred years.

In September of 1937, hemp became illegal. The most useful crop known became a drug and our planet has been suffering ever since.

Congress banned hemp because it was said to be the most violence-causing drug known. Anslinger, head of the Drug Commission for 31 years, promoted the idea that marihuana made users act extremely violent. In the 1950s, under the Communist threat of McCarthyism, Anslinger now said the exact opposite. Marijuana will pacify you so much that soldiers would not want to fight.

Today, our planet is in desperate trouble. Earth is suffocating as large tracts of rain forests disappear. Pollution, poisons and chemicals are killing people. These great problems could be reversed if we industrialized hemp. Natural biomass could provide all of the planet's energy needs that are currently supplied by fossil fuels. We have consumed 80% of our oil and gas reserves. We need a renewable resource. Hemp could be the solution to soaring gas prices.

The move to legalize medical marijuana is advancing in the Midwest, with Michigan poised to be the first state between the Rockies and New England to sanction the use of the illegal drug by terminally or seriously ill people.

Michigan voters will decide in November whether to authorize marijuana use, if a doctor determines suffering could be eased by the drug from such diseases as cancer, Crohn's disease, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's or hepatitis C.

While years of public opinion polling show opposition to legalizing marijuana, polls and the overwhelming majority of state referendum votes show strong support for medical use of marijuana. At the same time, some physician groups have dropped their resistance to medical marijuana.

The combined effect of public opinion, medical research showing benefits of marijuana in the treatment of some diseases and shifts in attitudes in the medical community has fueled the movement that has seen 12 states adopt medical marijuana laws in the past dozen years.

"We need to get beyond the political debate and into medical terms. That's where the public is," said Dianne Byrum, a former state legislator in Michigan and spokeswoman for the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care, the Detroit-area group that turned in 475,000 signatures to earn a spot on the fall ballot.

"This is really about patients and their suffering. ... For them, medical use of marijuana should give them comfort and not the threat of arrest or jail," Byrum said.

Doctors drop opposition
There is evidence in the Midwest suggesting political interest. Five Michigan cities already have medical marijuana ordinances. The Minnesota state Senate recently approved a medical marijuana measure, though it died on the House floor. A similar measure died in the Illinois state Senate in the past session. Other measures were debated in Ohio, Wisconsin and Missouri.

Less than four months before the November election, there is no organized opposition to Michigan's binding referendum. The Michigan State Medical Society, the state's arm of the American Medical Association, recently dropped its opposition to medical marijuana and said it will be neutral in the fall campaign.

"We're keeping an open mind that marijuana in limited amounts can help some," said Dr. Michael Sandler, a diagnostic radiologist and president of the Michigan State Medical Society.

But resistance is expected to develop, given the political volatility of the marijuana issue and the experience California has had since voters there endorsed use of medical marijuana in 1996.

The California law says that patients need a prescription to acquire the drug but it is otherwise vague. That legal opening led to the creation of so-called marijuana clubs and the large-scale growing of the drug in fields and homes. Hundreds of marijuana dispensaries are scattered around the state, and dozens of cities have cracked down on cultivation.

California endorsed "political chaos," said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML, which advocates "the repeal of marijuana prohibition."

"No other state has and no other state will replicate what California did," St. Pierre said. "Every ensuing state [that has approved laws also] narrowly define the types of diseases, require the amount of cannabis they can possess is relatively small and the number of plants they can possess is relatively small. And there will be absolutely no retail dispensary-like model that has emerged in California."

What Michigan proposes
With that in mind, the Michigan proposal would allow a patient to legally possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana or grow up to 12 plants in enclosed and locked facilities.

Although other states have followed similar guidelines regarding quantities of pot and eligible medical conditions, efforts are under way in some states to change existing laws. A proposal in Oregon, which approved its law in 1998, would allow the drug to be sold in liquor stores. In neighboring Washington, state health officials have proposed limiting patients to 1 1/2 pounds of pot, an amount that has been criticized by some patient advocates as too little and by law-enforcement groups as too much.

The political sensitivity of marijuana was evident two years ago when voters in South Dakota narrowly rejected a medical marijuana plan 52 percent to 48 percent.

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has endorsed medical marijuana, but only if science and the medical community concur and if it were carefully controlled. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is opposed to medical marijuana.

'Just another step'
There is an awkward relationship between states and the federal government on the issue. States that have embraced medical marijuana are technically in violation of federal law after the Supreme Court's 2005 ruling that said such laws do not provide immunity from federal prosecution. Some marijuana clinics in California have been raided by federal drug agents.

The Michigan vote will be watched as a potential barometer for a region that has yet to embrace medical marijuana.

"This is just another step in a fairly steady progression that the law is starting to catch up with public opinion," said Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that advocates decriminalizing marijuana.

"The dirty little secret to this is that a lot of folks in professional politics think this is a lot more controversial than it really is," Mirken added.

I am not a geek

Though there are plenty of times when I wish that I were. And I am not in any way trying to suck up to geeks. Though, again, there are times when I really need to.

You see, I am not all that computer savvy. I know how to do a lot of things, but there are more that are completely out of my ken. Thank God for tech support. I love tech support. If I could, I would send each one that I have had to deal with, a case of beer. Good beer, not some commercial crap. Because a good tech support person is worth their weight in gold.

In comes the Answers Portal at backupanswers dot com. Their goal is to help home PC users and Medium sized businesses with how to articles, information about data formats with tools and tips on how to solve most of your PC errors. That sounds really good to me, as I make some kind of stupid PC error at least a couple of times a day. They have a blog where specific problems and their solutions are spelled out in easy to understand language. At least I understood it, and I found that to be a major plus. It will definitely cut down on the amount of time that I spend on the phone with my techies.

Michigan Medical Marijuana

Have you heard of the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act yet?

I was surprised to hear about it from my son. He is discussing it in one of his classes at UofM. The proposal is being sponsered by Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care (MCCC), and is heading for the november ballot.

The proposal would

* Allow terminally and seriously ill patients who find relief from marijuana to use it with their doctors' approval.
* Protect these seriously ill patients from arrest and prosecution for the simple act of taking their doctor-recommended medicine.
* Permit qualifying patients or their caregivers to cultivate their own marijuana for their medical use, with limits on the amount they could possess.
* Create registry identification cards, so that law enforcement officials could easily tell who was a registered patient, and establish penalties for false statements and fraudulent ID cards.
* Allow patients and their caregivers who are arrested to discuss their medical use in court.
* Continuing certain restrictions on the medical use of marijuana, including prohibitions on public use of marijuana and driving under the influence of marijuana.

Here is hoping that it passes.

We have a "Do Not Call" list here in Pennsylvania, where you can call a number, put your name on the list, and you won't get stupid telemarketer calls. That is all fine and good, but what about the ones that sneak through? Most of them are scams by people who are trying to get your personal information. There is a new service where you can report these numbers. It is called Report Phone Numbers, now that is easy enough isn't it?

All you do is input a phone number into the indicated field, hit the search button, and then you are allowed to comment on what you know of the number. Your comment could be that this is a scam, it is a collection agency that is doing their calling outside of the law, or something similar.

You have got to give this a try.

Iron man another so-so movie

I am not happy with the movies that I have been watching lately. First it was "The Happening", which I was told was really cool and edgy.

It just left me on edge.

And now it was "Iron Man", with Robert Downy, Jr. All I heard about this movie was raves. How cool it was, how much action, the CIG stuff was spectacular. And after about 30 minutes into it, MLW as asleep and I was trying desperately to find some redeeming quality.

I didn't.

Today the latest "Indiana Jones" movie comes out in DVD. I have already been told that this one is not that great, so I don't have any high expectations, but c'mon Hollywood. I am on vacation this week. I want some good movies to watch.

The best time of the year

It is that time again. Halloween. Tuesday night is our annual Halloween Parade. We have been lucky the past few years, as The Princess has not had to march in the parade. And with her getting older fixing up a costume is a lot easier.

Some parents are the crafty, handy kind of folks who make their kids Halloween Costumes every year. Not us. We have a couple of times, but if we could just convince her to dress up with clothes we had around, we were all over that. But she is getting older and dressing up is once again something that she is interested in.

Great.

So, we started looking around for costumes and found Halloweenadventure dot com. They have movie costumes, kids costumes, costumes for Mom if you know what I mean, and a whole slew of others. Very cool, and very reasonable in price. One day shipping via UPS. You can have your costume in way enough time before the party you are going to be attending. Or Trick or Treating. Either way you are covered.

I think that I am looking at the vampire costume. For the obvious reason. You can never be too safe on the day when the membrane between this world, and the next is so thin. I would rather be mistaken, as opposed to just being taken. Know what I mean?

The Happening

Have any of you seen this movie? MLW and I watched it on DVD tonight. And I gotta be honest with you. Not so much, kids.

I can wrap my head around the concept. I am good with that. But the way the characters are depicted. Nope. MLW compared the dialoge in "The Happening" with David Lynch and "Twin Peaks". She liked the way the dialoge was written, taking it as the way the M. Knight just treats his characters.

Moving on. Going on vacation means that we need to figure out something to do with The Roxinator. The Vampire Hunter, and Zombie Chaser. She is entitled to her time off also. Usually I just crack open the yellow pages, but the other day I found The Dog Boarding Directory.

Very cool. A nationwide registry of dog boarding facilities whose listings include everything from your basic dog boarding kennel to top of the line, luxury dog boarding facilities.

If you have a pet that doesn't travel well, like ours, you have to check this out.

If you haven't, you need to. Most states have cut off times for when a person can register and still vote in the November election. And we need as many folks out there voting as we can get this time around.

Other than the Presidential Election, which is incredibly important, Michigan also has a Medical Marijuana proposal on its slate. I have been writing about this proposal here, if you want to see what is being said.

The point being, get registered and get out and vote this November. It is that important.

In this day and age there is one thing that everyone needs to do when they are thinking about buying a new house. That would be a Sexual Predator Search. All persons who have been convicted sex offenders have to abide by "Megan's Law".

Megan's law is a federal bill that requires that the public to be kept informed of sexual predators and their whereabouts. Available information about sexual predators includes name, picture, address and nature of crime, and more.

So, if you are looking at moving, make sure that you know who is living around your new home.

A sign of the times

Not too long ago, here in Pennsylvania, we had a man who had been convicted of molesting young girls released from prison. He had served his sentence. Unfortunately, he had been in prison for so long that once out he does not have to register with the police under the Megan Law. Other offenders are not in the same position. They are required to register with the police department where they are living.

This is a benefit to you. Because a covicted Child Molester has to register you can find out their proximity to you. This is important if you are planning on moving, or just want to know of any dangers to your family.

She really kinda creeps me out with that coy look of hers. You just know that she could at any point in time just reach out and rip your throat out. With no problems at all.

But what about the husbands? Of course you would have to have Christopher:

He would be the kind of vampire that you could sit around and have a drink and a good cigar with. But again, you know that at some point in time he could get bored and just kill you for the fun.

Tom would be the one vampire that you just absolutely know is crazy. I am not talking a little off kilter like most of us are. I am talking complete, full out, bat shit crazy. And that is never a good thing in a being that has the kind of strength that a vampire has. Not a whole lot can stop one. And that is not a happy thought, now is it?

Matt would be a welcome respite from Tom. You just know that Matt would be reasonable counterpoint. At least you would hope.

And now that I have completely creeped me out, I am going to close to go buy some garlic.

I was just watching a trailer for the movie "The Stepford Wives".

And I got to thinking, what if they were a different kind of wife. Hmm? What do you think that that would turn out to be?

I can just see knocking on my next door neighbors door, and having this one answer.

Angelina's mannerisms are well known. You can just see her answering the door, and then apologizing about how she looks as she wipes the blood from her mouth with the back of her hand. And then graciously inviting you in for some coffee.

She is really not looking like she is having any fun, is she? She is a good and faithful friend. A tad wild, with a galloping streak that just does not seem to go away. But a good friend.

We rescued Roxie a few years back from the West Shore Humane Society. We already had a cat, and I am not the cat liking kind of guy. My wife and daughter relented when I started whining about wanting a dog.

Anyway, I wanted Roxie to get some face time. She doesn't get to visit much with folks.

I have a park behind my house, where the zombies go to be with their own kind.

Well, I haven't seen any of them looking like Pamela there, but you get my meaning.

There are patrols through the park all summer long, but when school is back in session, the patrols end. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but I just live here. I take Cerebus for a walk in the park every night. We tend to stir up the undead when we take that walk.

They don't take well to being interrupted in whatever it is that they are doing, but with Cerebus along I don't get too much crap from them. The moaning just about drives me crazy, though.

Why do zombies creep me out so much?

I have always been creeped by zombies. I have no idea if it is there shambling way of walking, or that freaking moaning that they always do. Regardless, zombies creep me out.

Maybe it is because they just never leave you alone. They just keep coming, and even if they do go to where ever it is that they go, when they smell your blood they come out again. Zombies are worse than dogs. Dogs, at least, give up and go take a nap after awhile. Zombies keep on coming. If you are in a building, they will just surround the building and keep up that infernal moaning.

Zombies are insufferable.

And they creep me out.

Talking genealogy blues

Trying to find your ancestors is maddening. At time it is like trying to find an needle in a haystack. And the cost of each birth certificate, and marriage license can break you. That is why when you come across a site that can give you access to public records search you have found a gem.

I have been tracing my family back to England and it took me a good 10 years to get the information that I could have gotten in a few hours using Public Records DB dot Org. If you are doing any kind of genealogy work, you need to use this site.

Friends don't let friends drink Bud lime

What the heck is it with Budweiser and lime? I am not getting it. Same with Miller and lime.

People are not to drink beer with fruit in it. Limes are for gin and tonic. Not beer.

If you have to put fruit in your beer, that pretty much means that the beer sucks. Big time.

If you need to do something to your beer to make more people drink it. Improve the taste.

Don't put lime in your beer. Especially since it won't be a real lime, it will be lime flavoring. Chemicals on top of chemicals. Blech.

Finding your ancestors

Anyone who has done any genealogy work can tell you that trying to find your ancestors is not that easy. Birth certificates get lost, family bibles get lost, marriage and death certificates get lost. Everything gets lost.

It is very frustrating. That is, until I came across this site for Texas Marriage Records. Not that my family came from Texas, they didn't but that is what popped up in my trusty search engine when I typed "marriage records". The company that it links to, Nationwide Marriage Records has a state by state archive. Better yet, when I typed in my last name I saw that I could get a year subscription for $9.95. That is better than sending away to the county court house in any state.

If you are doing any kind of family search it is worth it to try this service.

Zombies in my dreams

I had one of my weird zombie dreams last night.

I was in a house with another family. It was a HUGE house with lots of windows. Which you really don't want if you are trying to hide out from zombies. They have this tendency to break through windows and eat you.

There were automatic weapons in abundance, but there seemed to be a paucity of ammunition. And there was that disturbing image of a huge parking lot just behind the house.

They tend to attack milling people.

Awhile back I wrote about the ultimate, or rather one of a infinite number of ulitmate, band of vampires. Questioning whether or not a group of bloodsuckers could hang together enough to even play in a band before they waded into the crowd. Treating their fans like so many courses on a blood buffet.

What about a group made up of zombies? THAT boggles the mind, doesn't it? What would their singing sound like? guttural moanings?

Some folks say that Avril's vocalizations sound like that now? By the way, which Avril do you like best? The one above, or this one:

Then of course you could also have Christina. Hopefully her singing would be true to her current form. Though, it would give new meaning to the lyrics of some of her songs, now wouldn't it?
